ST2334 - Probability and Statistics.
Compulsory module for all computer science students (but they never justified why), and a total bane for we simple-minded creatures who just want to know things like $2.60 = $2 note + 50cent + 10cent. Who cares about complex integration and pages of statistical tables filled with God-knows-numbers that goes as tiny as 0.00065? Do you?
Chapter 3 says this:
"A random variable is a function that associates a real number with each element in the sample space. "
And you must be wondering why I'm talking this load of shit about random variables. Good question. Well, I was just thinking about we people (yes, good-old us) from God's perspective. Have you ever imagined how it feels like to look down on a crust full of two-legged mammals going about with their daily lives, tweaking their fates occasionally to match each's destiny? In God's eyes, are we just mere little randomlites? Like thousands and millions of tiny duckweed leaves moving in unpredictable directions continously for eternity?
At a micro-level (it's time to relearn your economics if you have no friggin idea what I'm bull-shitting about), our lives are as unpredictable as we hate them to be. Don't you remember the first time you ever heard the line "Who knows what will happen tomorrow?" back in elementary or high school? Didn't you stop in your tracks there and then, and pondered for that fleeting 5 seconds? I did. And I still do. Because individually, we're helpless duckweeds that are at the mercy of other people's decisions, being knocked into our path by the exerted forces from our neighbouring weed-fellows. That's right. There's NOTHING you can do to stop it.
Every decision made in this world, this minute, this second will somehow directly, or indirectly come round to you. Your boyfriend can decide to leave you. Your mother's sister's husband's cousin's son's dog-walker's best friend can decide not to eat Long John Silver, and therefore causing it to close for good, resulting in you being unable to enjoy your favourite fattening fish n chips meal. A man in Sudan can decide on executing a terrorist uprising which triggers a declaration of war by Uncle Sam and hence impacting on our economy, leaving your boss with no choice but to retrench you, slacker. Then you might think - oh okay, so be it, since there's nothing we can do about it, yeah? My friend, you're so DAMN right. You are. Look, turn on the radio and hear those sad love songs JA is playing (www.power98.com.sg). And do we even need to wonder why there are so many sad love songs?
So go forth, my friend, go make that decision about eating KFC for dinner, and that decision about forgetting that heart-breaker. And remember, that every decision you make is worth something.
